Design

ZTE Cymbal-G LTE Z232TL and Z233VL is not the kind of modern smartphone that people expect to find this day. The clamshell and touchscreen form factor is the dead giveaway. Most modern smartphone using bar form factor which makes this phone an odd one. Clamshell designs usually used by older phone so it is a nice surprise.

Not only the unusual design that makes this phone different from the rest of it. It also has such a small size, measured at 4.26” x 2.18” x 0.73” and weighs only 4.59 ounces. Anyone who was used to bigger and heavier phone will need some time to get used to this one.

Display

ZTE Cymbal-G with its clamshell form factor using a small 2.8 inches of color TFT LCD screen with 240 x 320 pixels resolution. The phone also has an external display that measures only 0.96 inches and using mono TFT screen. Unfortunately, there is no protection display on both the internal and external display.

Software

As it said before, this phone is the first of its kind. Not only has it sporting unusual form factor, this phone also used a different type of OS. ZTE Cymbal-G uses Linux as its operating system. This is not a popular OS for a phone, unlike Android and iOS. Most people know that Linux was used on a computer and not on a phone, so this is definitely something good to have and will give an interesting user experience.

Camera

Sadly, this phone only has one camera, the 2 MP rear camera. People can use it to take a picture and video recording at 1600 x 1200 pixels. The picture and video quality is not something that will win any award, so it is a huge disappointment.

Performance

Its small size didn’t necessarily mean that it has no power. This phone uses Quad Core 1.1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 210 MSM8909 as it processor. That is a pretty powerful processor to use on such a small mobile device.

The processor is good but unfortunately, it only has 512 MB RAM, so do not expect to it to run on the heavier app. The internal storage is also somewhat limited with only 4 GB (and only 827 MB usable). But that should not deter people to store more files on the phone, as long as they use MicroSD that can keep up to 32 GB additional data.

Connectivity

Thankfully this phone has everything in the term of connectivity. It supports 4G LTE for high-speed internet connection. It also has Wi-Fi, Bluetooth version 4.1 A2DP for sharing a file, microUSB 2.0, and A-GPS for direction. So far, nothing wrong in the connectivity department.

Battery

The battery of ZTE Cymbal-G is not that remarkable as well. It uses a removable Lithium-ion 1500 mAh that was said able to stay up for 8 hours of talk time and 10 days of standby time. For a heavy user, they need to charge this phone more than once every single day.

Wrap-up

This small size phone indeed carries something different both in the term of design and OS that it used. Powerful Quad-core processor that supports 4G LTE connection is the good part of this phone. But with such as small RAM and internal memory, not to mention the lack of camera, people should think twice before they decide to have one.
